Training Program for Elementary School Teachers

Rebuilding English Education from the ground up!

Goals and Features of the Course

Educational Goals:

Since 2009, Fukuoka University of Education has offered an English language specialization for students studying elementary education. This program is designed to build students’ English communication abilities and improve students understanding of both Japanese and foreign cultures. Students will learn English while gaining experience with the Foreign Language curriculum as outlined in the Ministry of Education course of study. In order to meet the needs of the new global society, our program aims to train specialists and leaders in primary English education.

Specialty Key Points:
We accept a limited number of students in order to have more personalized classes, as well as to build a strong school community. Our students build strong relationships with the university faculty while gaining deep understanding of their general and pedagogical courses. It is this understanding that allows students to work with faculty on researching and learning about a variety of fields, including foreign language education, communication, phonology, culture, and literature. This one-to-one interaction between teachers and sudents culminates in fourth year, where students have the chance to write a graduation thesis in English on a topic of their choosing. Students also have the opportunity for both short and long term studies abroad. Students going on long term stays may attend one of our sister schools: Northern Arizona University(USA),The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse(USA),Canberra University(Australia) or Linnaeus University(Sweden).

Curricular Key Points:
Our elementary education majors spend their first and second year learning classroom pedagogy. From the third year, students develop their understanding of the subject matter and developmental sciences needed to teach elementary school. On the English major side, students have classwork in each year from first to fourth. Students will study English conversation, composition, language, phonology, literature, culture, and communication during their stay at our university. From second year onward, students will focus on preparing for teaching foreign language in elementary schools. Students will spend three weeks during their third year doing teaching fieldwork in our university’s attached elementary schools. Our students will also have the option of attaining junior high and high school level English teaching credentials above their elementary level licenses.
